Mt Elgon Trek Kenya & Uganda

Itinerary

Depart Nairobi at 7.00am to Kitale by bus taking 7hrs by road. Proceed to Mt Elgon park Chorlim gate through Endebess town. Option of flying to Kitale airstrip available.

Break camp after breakfast at 7:15am. Drive to Suam border taking (3hrs) to the immigration point where we stamp our passports then back to Mt Elgon. Transfer into the park via land-rover and drive up to road end.

0500hrs wake-up call 5:30 breakfast served, break camp and we head to summit Koitoboss 4200m about (3-4hrs) trek then down to the caldera and over to Uganda (2hrs). At the Suam river border we will be received by armed Ugandan Wildlife Authority Rangers who will accompany us down the Ugandan trail after having lunch.
Dinner and overnight will be in a fly tent camp at the Mude Caves (3500m).

This is the day of Summit challenge with the day trek to Wagagai (4321m), the peak of Mt. Elgon. We will walk along the rim of one of the world largest calderas as we approach the summit. Here are several of small lakes left behind by glaciers of the last ice age. The trek takes 4-5 hours to summit. We then return to Mude camp for late lunch. After a short rest we descend down to Sasa river camp (2-3 hours) and a well deserved overnight.

Our descend will take us through the scenic montane forest and mixed bamboo with a lunch on the way. The heath and moorland gives way to forest at 3000m followed by small scale farmlands. On our way meet troops of black and white Colobus as well as the Blue monkeys and many varied bird species. At Bumasola (1770m) ETA 2.00pm we will bid the crew goodbye. We then transfer to Jinja and from Jinja we change vehicles and head to Kisumu city for an overnight stop.

After morning breakfast and checking out, we take a 6-hour drive to Nairobi or fly back.
